On The Road: London to Lands End is Sam Mellish debut photography book. The work is an exploration of livelihoods imbued on the edge of society, a rich and raw glance where moments of solitude and swiftness pass each day. Celebrating the uncelebrated, boycotting the mainstream, the work embraces a timeless yet challenged trade. Floating between the observational and the voyeuristic, documenting the mundane, the eccentric and a unique and much loved Britishness, the work challenges the icons of the highway and brings home a real taste of Roadside Britain.
The project originated during the summer of 2008, documenting the services along the once ‘Great South West Road’ the A30, a route steeped in history stretching from South West London to Lands End peninsula, the work also contains observations from the A303.
